Scent is a huge part of how we perceive our environment. Some scents evoke memories, some even physical reactions. This week, we want to know what scents are significant in your life – scents you like, or even scents you hate! Let ‘er rip! (Or not, if that’s not a scent you enjoy ::wink::)
I’ll kick it off.
Vanilla: My entire life, I’ve favored vanilla-scented perfumes. I’d like to think of it as my “signature” scent, but I don’t ever manage to put perfume on, so I don’t think I can claim that. It is my preferred scent for candles, perfume, laundry detergents – whatever. In fact, it’s even my preferred scent for my coffee (Grande Skinny Vanilla Latte, anyone?).
Clean Baby: How can I not love this smell? There’s something about the sweet mix of baby shampoo, bedtime lavender lotion and baby powder that calms me. It’s primal, it’s just this sweet, perfect sense that everything is right in the world because I’m holding my child, my baby, and I made her, and she’s perfect, and we’re perfect together. It’s OK.
Metal: I love the smells – and tastes, yes, weird I know – of certain metals. Like, old doorknobs? You know what I’m talking about, the old brass ones? Those smell awesome. And if I went around licking doorknobs – which I totally do not anymore – I’d tell you they taste good, too.
Morning Coffee: This is better than afternoon coffee, or evening coffee. The coffee that I make in the morning is specifically for the smell of it brewing; I hardly drink my first cup, it grows cold as I bustle around the house getting everyone ready for the day. But smelling the whole bean, or ground if I’m lazy, coffee at 6:15am? That wakes me up. Literally, wakes me the hell up and I feel like I can get on with my day.
Chicken Pot Pie and/or Homemade Chicken Soup: Something about these scents comfort me – definitely something from my childhood. If I feel like crap, even a ready-made bake-in-the-oven-for-20-mins chicken pot pie can make me feel all better. I just lean over, take a deep breath and let that warm, fuzzy feeling fill me up to the brim, pushing out any bad thoughts or feelings.
Vicks Vapo Rub, and Ginger Ale: These two scents together. Obviously a “woe-as-me-I’m-sick” combination, I like the slightly sweet smell of the ginger ale, and the distinctive, sharp smell of the Vicks. Add in some saltine crackers to eat and I’ll be feeling better soon!
And so I turn it over to the masses – what smells do you like? Dislike? Any weird smells that really make you smile? Turn you on? What say you?

don’t get me started on how MUCH i love vaporub smell…

Yeah the bubbles aren’t as much fun, and the fizz doesn’t smell very good. But until then.

Count me in on the Gardenia. It can sometimes be too perfumey for me to wear, but I love the smell of it on other people.

cookies! freshly baked cookies are one of my favorite smells.
i also love the smell of borders. it’s my favorite bookstore by far, and the smell of the books and coffee mingling makes me smile immediately (even if the toddler managed to take 20 minutes to get through the front door and i had to pick up half the bookshelf she knocked over…)

Yeah I’m all about the smell of gasoline at a gas station. Does that count for a metallic scent?

Fresh cut grass is a good one. We don’t get a lot of that since we’ve lived in apartments our entire married lives, but it was nice when I lived with my mother.

Yay smells! But I have to disagree on metallic, metallic smells always reminds me of blood.

They remind me of blood, too, but somehow that doesn’t bother me.

Honeysuckle – its sickenly sweet and yet I love it, first thing in the morning when I walk out the door, the sun is just rising with dew covering the grass…yep, definitely one of my favorites.
As for odd scents (or unusual ones anyway) the smell of sex in the air after a super hot, sweaty romp. There is something totally satisfying to know what went on just recently and you can still smell the sweetness in the air…

That’s a good one, and that image sounds heavenly. And sex? Yeah that’s a good smell. But I hate the scent of spermicide condoms. UGH.

Ok, I am going to be viewed as a weirdo for this… I love the smell of my son’s wet diapers (only if they are just a bit wet, not soaked). We have used disposables with him and I think it is the baby powder type scent that is activated when damp… I know, I am a freak!!
Also, I love the smell of a book… that papery musty smell. MMM
