Work Sucks, I Know.

The car won’t start–it’s falling apart
I was late for work and the boss got smart
My pantyline shows–got a run in my hose
My hair went flat–man, I hate that (hate that)

Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse
I realized I forgot my purse
With all this stress–I must confess
This could be worse than PMS

This job ain’t worth the pay
Can’t wait ’til the end of the day

~Shania Twain – “Honey I’m Home”

Computer crashingI work a lot. I have a full-time day job as a CRM Administrator at a small business (supporting ~50 end users). I am attempting to go to school a a full-time online student, slamming as much knowledge on a given subject into my brain in 5-week intervals. I have also recently started a side business doing WordPress installation, blog migration and design. Oh, and I have two children, a husband and a very demanding mother.

I work a lot.

I work a lot, and a lot of my work sucks.

Most of it is rewarding, for all that it sucks. The kids? It sucks, but it’s very rewarding. The WordPress work? Sometimes it sucks, but there’s no better feeling for me than being able to say – HEY! I did that! And it’s online! And I DID THAT! The school work sucks but it’s a means to an end – specifically, my Bachelors in Education and a plan to have a private vocal studio and become independently wealthy.

But my day job?

Let me explain. I work at a company of about 50-60 people. This is a software company. They sell library software. This software company has undergone a lot of change in the last year or so, they’ve received venture capital funding, and I’m hoping that things are looking up. I took this job because I thought it would be a challenge. Unfortunately, I find myself spending my days doing my best not to go crazy with boredom and brain rot.

Then again, it gives me time for other things. Not that I would ever tweet, Facebook or blog while at work. NEVER. (Don’t look at the time or day this was posted, ok?)

My official title is CRM Administrator / Administrative Assistant. Talk about a fucking contradiction. In my interviews, I was very much under the impression that I was coming on as CRM Administrator, and that little “Administrative Assistant” bit was just so that they could occassionally ask me to do things like act as back up for the Office Manager so she could take some vacation time. At least, that’s what they told me.

In reality, I’m a glorified Admin Asst. who also had to manage our CRAPTASTIC CRM system with no resources or training, and no company buy-in. No one likes this software except for my boss. Who is the Finance and Administration director, because we don’t have a real IT department, because DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED (I can’t really complain about that, because they outsource their IT to my husband’s company and as such, I get to work with him every day and we commute together and it’s just so damn cute you might as well gag yourself with a spoon NOW and get it over with).

So. Half the company – including the sales team – considers me the Admin Asst who answers the phones, the doors, sorts the mail, copies checks, and files. Because sadly, that is most of my job lately.

The other half of the company wants me to work miracles with aforementioned CRAPTASTIC CRM system and make it do things it can’t do, or won’t do. I spend most of the rest of my time working with the support team for the CRAPTASTIC CRM because the things it CAN do, it doesn’t do properly because the system has too many bugs.

The rest of my time I spend supporting and maintaining legacy databases and information systems that the CRAPTASTIC CRM was supposed to replace.

Someone shoot me.

To recap: I’m way smarter than this, really, I was responsible for an enterprise level CRM upgrade at a medium-sized business prior to this job, but I’m treated like the mail girl at my last job. It frustrates me.

OK, so now I want to hear why YOUR job sucks. I’m willing to bet it sucks more than  mine, which means you’ll only make me feel better. And don’t you want to make me feel better? Why is it that whenever we take a job, it never turns out to be as billed. There should be some sort of false job advertising law.
    Well, mine’s at http://glowstars.net/?p=1159

  • I didn’t do my own post because I work with family. Sometimes it’s awesome, like this year. I have had 2 surgeries and my MIL has never stopped payingme and I have been home more than I have worked this year and it will run into next year too.
Sometimes though, it can be really hard. My MIL and SIL are great wonderful people and I love them, but you can’t get away with anything. They know my whole life. Every little thing. Work is our life, and our life is our work. It’s all woven in. I had to go in on Christams Day last year to check on someone’s package because I live the closest. So sometimes it sucks. But probably not as much as others.

  • I feel you on the working several jobs part. Somehow I think I’m going to be able to fit it all in, and then I find myself going insane.

  • Oh, girl. We need to open a couple of bottles of wine and share job nightmare stories. I feel your pain in being under-appreciated and under-utilized.

Some days I want to violently insert my letter opener into something or someone.

I should really give that thing away before someone gets hurt.

And you inspired an outlet for some SERIOUS ANGST on my part.

I’m gonna go all emo and cry in the corner now….

  • Ooh, the bait-and-switch! I had that happen at my last job. *shakes fist* Sorry, lovie. :(

I have one specific job issue right now (that really isn’t much of a “job” issue, but it’s spilled into personal territory, which doesn’t make me happy). However, due to the set-up at work and the nature of my complaint, I can’t post on my blog because it would be SO EASY for someone who knows me IRL to figure it all out.

  • That is OBNOXIOUS, honestly. I very briefly had a job that was advertised as an assistant librarian (while I was still in graduate school) that promised me opportunities to work in cataloging and reference. It ended up being monitoring a computer lab. That also had about 100 or so volumes of books that students could check out. Fun! Also? NOT AT ALL AS ADVERTISED.

  • First time Girl Talk participant, here! I’ve been lurking for awhile (I know, I know!) but decided to make myself known today. And post about the topic for the 1st time, too.

I’ve held some pretty crappy jobs in the past. Working for stupid people really sucks.

  • It sucks when work sucks, and when everything FEELS like work!
Can the last 3 blog posts on my site count as job venting?? Because taking care of things at home is becoming more work than my “telecommuting” work!
    Grrrrr.

  • You are most definitely smarter than that. And that’s why you can go to school full time, work full time and have a side job too. I admire you for being able to handle all of that! I feel tired just reading it.

  • Isn’t it illegal to advertise a job when the conditions and duties of the work don’t match the actual work that is supplied?

    I’m sure there’s some law.

Though, you guys don’t even get unions (DUDE.), so it’s probably just the UK.
